West Lake & Truc Bach Lake

Situated on the northwestern edge of Hanoi’s center, West Lake and the adjacent Truc Bach Lake form a scenic area known for its relaxed atmosphere and open space.
The two lakes are separated by a narrow dike, offering contrasting but connected experiences within walking distance.

West Lake is Hanoi’s largest lake and is best approached as a place for leisure rather than as a traditional sightseeing destination. The wide road that circles the lake allows for walking, jogging, or cycling, with views shifting between tree-lined streets, local temples, and residential neighborhoods. There is no fixed route or single landmark, making personal pacing and casual observation the most common way to explore.

The area is best visited in the early morning or late afternoon, when temperatures are cooler and activity around the lake is more visible. Sunrise and sunset often draw photographers, joggers, and residents enjoying the waterfront. Visitors planning to walk or bike around the lake may benefit from deciding on a route in advance, as the lake’s size and irregular shoreline can be disorienting.

Several notable sites line the lake’s perimeter. Tran Quoc Pagoda, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Hanoi, is located on a small peninsula connected by a causeway. Phu Tay Ho, situated on another prominent point, attracts visitors interested in spiritual offerings and panoramic lake views. Numerous cafes and rooftop spots along the lakefront provide resting points and scenic stops.

On the other side of the dike, Truc Bach Lake offers a quieter alternative. Smaller in scale and bordered by low-rise buildings, this lake is often associated with local dining. Streets around the lake are known for serving traditional dishes such as pho cuon and bun oc, especially in the evening. The area also holds historical significance as the site where a U.S. pilot was captured during the Vietnam War, a fact occasionally noted on commemorative signage nearby.
